Howden and Derwent dams (of Dam Busters fame) were both over-
flowing vigorously, not something that you see very often.

The village nestles in Tideswell Dale which is a narrow valley

situations the automated forecasts for Tideswell always greatly

RMK: Summer in November! A truly remarkable day. After the early
fog cleared the day was cloudless with a clear blue sky and
unbroken warm sunshine. The max temp was 20.1 which, by a large
margin, is the highest November temperature since we moved here
in 2009. The previous highest was 15.1 on 4th Nov 2010. There’s
no long-term data for Tideswell against which I can compare
today’s temperature. The best I have is Met. O. 856c which shows
that the highest November temperature in Buxton in the 30-years
between 1931 and 1960 was 16.7. Long-term local residents who I
spoke to today say that they have never known it so warm in
November but, unfortunately, such anecdotal evidence cannot
be trusted. Nevertheless, I’m sure we were very close to the
November record for here and may well have beaten it. This
afternoon I was down in Millers Dale and it was very much cooler
there. We are now into the 4-month period of the year when
Millers Dale gets no sunshine. Cold air flows down into the
dale and just sits there.

RMK:   It’s one of the most unpleasant days I have ever experienced in this country. After a hot and sweaty morning with the temperature getting up to 29.7 and with the dew point around 17-18 deg there was a thunderstorm approz 1230-1300. Quite a bit of electrical activity but only about 1 mm of rain. The temp dropped to 27.5. As the storm cleared the dew point shot up to 22.4 and has remained above 20 ever since. In the sunny spells after the storm the temperature gradually rose again reaching a high of 30.8 with the dew point around 21.5. Not a bad afternoon for Singapore! Today is the hottest day of any month
since I started recording data here in 2009. The previous highest was 29.2 on 18th July 2013. Roll on the return of the Atlantic air!

Had a splendid dry and warm day yesterday with sunny spells for the village Carnival Day at the end of Wakes Week. The village was packed out and the hostelries were doing a roaring trade. For me, the highlight of the day was several very low-level passes over the village by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. What an evocative sight and sound. I can remember (just!) when Spitfires were still operational in the RAF. I remember them flying at low level over the seafront at Largs when I was about 8 or 9.

Rain turned to moderate sleet soon after 0700z as the temp fell below 4 deg. Sleet died out around 0815z and there have been a few sunny intervals since then but as I type this at 0915z we have a shower of hail and sleet. All of this comes as a bit of a shock after a few days of warm summer weather!
