Tideswell, Derbyshire – Tuesday 8th May 2018

1900z   29002kt 20km 6Cu008 12.3/10.7 1008
RMK:   It was sunny and hot this morning. It then clouded over
in early afternoon. Slight rain started just before 1500z and
continued till around 1700z but it never amounted to much. It’s
been dry but mostly cloudy since 1700z. Max temp 21.7° just
before it clouded over in early afternoon. It’s now back down
to much more comfortable levels. Nice to have the Atlantic air
back! The sunshine total here for the 3-day holiday weekend
was 37.5 hours. That’s almost as much as the 38.2 hours we
managed during the whole of March! I haven’t had a chance to
check but I suspect that 37.5 hours may be the highest
3-day sunshine total in any month in the 10 years that I have
been here.

Tideswell, Derbyshire – Monday 7th May 2018

1600z   16009kt 20km 1Cu045 25.7/13.8 1015
RMK:   A hot, sunny day with only a few scraps of Cu.
Max temp 25.9°. That’s the hottest of the year so far but
it’s not exceptional for May. In the past 10 years there were
higher May temperatures in 2017 (27.4°), 2012 (28.3°) and
2010 (27.7°).

0900z   15004kt 20km 1Ci250 20.2/13.6 1019

no more than 10-15 seconds. Apart from that we had nothing and
I didn’t see any distant lightning.

Tideswell, Derbyshire – Friday 20th April 2018

1600z   29007kt 30km SKC 17.3/08.1 1023
RMK:   It remained rather cloudy till around midday with only
occasional sunny intervals. Through the afternoon the
cloud gradually dispersed and it has become increasingly
sunny. We now have wall-to-wall blue sky, deep blue overhead
and a little bit hazy-looking around the horizon. Max
temp 17.6° so, at least for me, it’s been a very much more
pleasant day than the excessive heat of yesterday.

outside of my comfort zone. With a max temp of 25.1° it’s
been, by some margin, the hottest April day in the 10 years
that we have been here. The previous highest was 21.9° in

RMK:   Drizzle and fog all day. The vis improved to 400m for a
time in early afternoon but it’s as thick as ever now with vis
down to 100m at times. With a max temp of 5.4° and a gusty
breeze it has felt decidedly raw. It’s one of the nastiest
faces of spring. There’s even some snowdrops still in bloom,
adding to the February feel and look. I still don’t understand
why fog as thick as this doesn’t trigger a severe weather
warning. Fog is fog, no matter what the mechanism is for
its formation. Attempting to drive at 60 m.p.h. on the main
roads through the area at present would be foolhardy.

0900z   01009g29kt 0250 -DZ FG VV/// 04.5/04.4 1009
RMK:   A thoroughly unpleasant, raw morning. There was some
slight rain mixed in with the drizzle 0715-0745z but it’s back
to drizzle only again. It looks like progressively colder
air has been advecting in during the morning. The temp was
6.9° at 0145z It then fell steadily to 6.0° at 0400z then
flat-lined at 6.0° till 0515z. After that it fell quite quickly

in front of a log fire with a good book. I spent the day in
front of a computer screen, which was probably a good
second-best! The rain ceased by 1000z but was immediately
replaced by slight drizzle. At the same time, the cloud base
lowered to ground level. We’ve been in fog ever since with
the vis mostly in the range 200-400m. There’s been slight
drizzle for much of the time and a decidedly raw breeze
which was gusting 25-30 knots 0800-1100z. Max temp only 6.4°.

RMK:   The rain is slowly easing but it remains gloomy, bleak
and raw. The statistics show just how dull and wet it has
been in recent weeks. With 30% of April gone we have already
had 107% of the average rainfall for the whole month but
only 16% of the average sunshine for the whole month. 43% of
spring has now elapsed. In that period the rainfall total
is 93% of the average for the whole of spring while the
sunshine total is only 18% of the average for the whole of
spring. Dull and wet sums up the first half of spring very
well. It has also been cold.

RMK:   A low overcast all day. Long spells of slight rain
since 0900z. It’s turning out to be a very dull month. Assuming
there’s no sunshine between now and sunset this will be the
6th sunless day so far. The first 10 days of the month have
produced a total of only 3.6 hours of sunshine. The snow problems
continue. Today it was a Ford Galaxy taxi that got stuck. Same
road, different snow drift. The taxi didn’t even get past the
first drift. The underside bottomed out on the drift and he was
left with limited weight on the wheels. We tried to help him
get moving but there was no chance. The driver was last seen
heading off on foot to try to get hold of someone with a
tractor. It’s all so unnecessary as most roads are completely
clear. As I said yesterday, the one causing the problems is
notorious. It gets ploughed from the village end only as far as
the last house. From the other end it is usually left to thaw
naturally and that’s the bit where the deepest drifts are
usually found. Max temp today was 10.7°. That’s not quite the
warmest of the year so far. That accolade goes to 10.8° on

RMK:   Fog slowly thinned after 0900z and eventually lifted
into low cloud around 1100z. The low cloud persisted into
the early afternoon and by the time it dispersed the middle
cloud was invading the sky. As a result, there was no
sunshine but it did remain dry. Almost all of the snow that
fell yesterday morning has now melted and we are left with
only the drifts from last week’s event. It’ll be a while
before the last of them is gone. Some lanes that don’t
lead to properties are still blocked by drifts. This
afternoon we came across an abandoned water authority Land
Rover that was well and truly stuck in a deep drift. Just
beyond it the was a ‘Chelsea Tractor’ type of Land Rover
that had been trying to negotiate the same lane. When the
driver realised that she couldn’t get through she had tried
to do a 3-point turn in a gateway and had also got stuck in
another deep drift. It’ll need a tractor to extricate both
vehicles. I don’t have much sympathy for the drivers as
there is no need to use that particular lane. There are two
alternatives, both of which have been ploughed and cleared.
Where the two vehicles are stuck is a notorious spot for
deep drifts. Almost always it is the last stretch of road
to be opened around the village after a heavy snowfall.

There’s still lots of deep snow on the ground but the cover is
now less than 50%. It’s an anomaly in the system whereby today
won’t count as a ‘snow lying’ day, even though there are
still roads blocked by deep drifts, but a day with a uniform
slight dusting would count. The rules appear to assume that
snowfall always produces an even cover and do not address the
situation in which dry powdery snow falls with a strong wind
blowing.

RMK:   That’s 3 consecutive 09-09z ‘ice’ days. That’s pretty
remarkable for the time of year. There’s been a little
fresh snow overnight but nothing significant. There’s
probably the equivalent of 10cm of lying snow. Once the
thaw does come we’ll almost certainly end up with less
than 50% cover despite still having huge amounts of snow
on the ground. One result of the very strong winds of the
past 2 days is that all of our east-facing windows have a
thick coating of salt on them. I suppose it could be road
salt but I think it’s much more likely to be from sea
spray. The Lincolnshire coast is 80-90 miles east of here.
Given the strength of the wind the travel time from the coast
to here would have been 2 hours at most so it certainly does
seem plausible.

the total amount of snow equates to something like 10-15cm

areas have been blown completely bare while more sheltered
areas have deep snow. There’s numerous drifts 1-1.5m and
some to 2m and higher. All of the lanes we investigated are

of 48 knots at 0020z. A lot of the lying snow has blown

enough to walk on without sinking in. There’s probably the

slight since then. It’s been intensifying during the past hour

wind that has been frequently gusting to 35-40 knots. Max gust
44 knots. Best guess is that there’s around 25cm of lying
snow but it varies from absolutely bare ground to waist-deep.
There’s drifts to about 1m around the house and garden.
Many roads are closed/impassable and the police have advised
everyone to keep off the roads in North Derbyshire. This is

drifts are now approaching 1 metre. I haven’t investigated

I doubt if we’ll see a snow plough while this lot continues.

snow and hail showers. There’s 3 cm lying snow with a little
drifting but I’m not aware of any traffic disruption in the

the drifting to be a problem but if there’s more snow

become a problem. Max temp +0.2° so we didn’t quite manage

dry day today with sunny intervals. The Liverpool Bay shower
stream has been running from due west for most of the day.
With this direction all of the shower activity passes north
of here. Late this afternoon the gradient appears to have
veered slightly. As a result the shower stream is coming
very slightly further south and, since 1600z, we have been
catching the southern edge of the stream. A change of
gradient direction of as little as 10° can make a big
difference. Anything north of due west round to NW, say 280°

With 5.9 hours of sun it was the sunniest day since 6.3 hours
on 24th Nov. Lots of walkers out. Mind you, it was a day to
be well clad. With a max of 2.9° and the wind gusting to
25-30 knots in the afternoon it was a bit ‘thin’ as they say
in these parts. Despite not having an air frost last night
ice and hoar frost persisted in the shade all day. Looks like
a much colder night in prospect with the temperature already
down to last night’s minimum.
