Tideswell, Derbyshire – Monday 31st December 2018

1700z   28012g24kt 20km 7Sc015 06.8/04.8 1032
RMK:   A dry, overcast, grey day. We’ve now had 7
completely sunless days on the trot. Sunshine total
for the month is 28.2 hours which is 72% of the

The Decembers of 2011 and 2015 had 27.9 hours and
26.5 hours, respectively. The sunniest December in my
record was 53.0 hours in 2012. That was the year in
which December had more sunshine than June.
Max temp 7.7°.

Quite windy all day but since the sharp peak at 0945z
it has been Force 4-6 with maximum gusts around 35 knots.
The line convection has almost arrived here but it looks
like we are going to catch a gap between two of the
segments. Max temp 8.3°.

since 2013.

0630z   21003kt 20km SKC +02.3/+01.6 1003
RMK:   A fine, frosty morning. Yesterday evening the
temperature rose to 5° before midnight and most of the
ice melted. Since midnight the temp has been slowly
falling and hard surfaces are very icy again. T think
it’s all ‘new’ ice rather than anything left over from
yesterday but it is very slippery. The ‘ice jam’ in
the AWS suddenly released at 2120z and it says that
we had 8 mm of rain in 5 min. Automation can be very
misleading at times.

Tideswell, Derbyshire – Saturday 15th December 2018

1700z   07012g22kt 3000 +RA 8St005 +00.2/-00.3 1000
RMK:   It’s been quite an afternoon. Freezing rain for
most of the afternoon, moderate to heavy at times. We’ve
still got heavy rain but with the temp now just above
0° there probably isn’t any further accumulation of
ice taking place. Everything is still covered with
very smooth, glassy ice. Lots of traffic accidents and
road closures over a wide area. Only 2 paces outside
of our front and back doors the paths become lethal.
I suppose it’ll all be gone by the morning.
Max temp +0.2° but it’s still going up. Despite the
mod/hvy rain the AWS hasn’t registered anything yet.
No doubt it’s all solid with ice.

1200z   14013g26kt 5000 -FZDZ 6St007 8Sc018 -01.1/-02.0 1009
RMK:   A bitter cold day with a strengthening wind. Slight
freezing drizzle on and off since about 0930z. Not a lot
of precipitation yet but hard surfaces are becoming
very icy. Temperature has been in the range -0.9° to -1.2°
since 0900z. The first band of proper rain looks like
it’ll be here within the next hour.

0900z   14012g24kt 5000 HZ 5Sc008 8Sc030 -01.0/-02.4 1013
RMK:   A very dull morning with the cloud base lowering.
It’s really nasty this morning with a bitter wind.
Whatever form the precipitation takes it’s going to
be extremely unpleasant when it arrives. I’ve got
plenty to do indoors today 🙂

Tideswell, Derbyshire – Friday 14th December 2018

1700z   10001kt 15km 1Ac150 4Ci250 -01.2/-02.2 1023
RMK:   A fine day but it was by no means sunshine all
the way. Large patches of thick upper cloud resulted
in it being only sunny periods. Nevertheless, it was
a slendid day to be out of doors. In the sun it felt
much warmer than the max of 2.4° in early afternoon.
Since then the temp has been falling steadily and
passed through 0° just before 1600z. Looking
forward to a possibly very interesting day tomorrow!

down. Max temp 3.3°.

to mist before clearing in mid-afternoon. It remaind
overcast, though. It’s been a particularly dull day
with indoor lights on all day. A raw breeze all day
and it’s slowly freshening and becoming quite gusty.

Tideswell, Derbyshire – Monday 10th December 2018

1700z   29003kt 15km 2Cu005 7Ci250 05.2/04.6 1027
RMK:   The shower stream running SE from the Cumbrian
coast has extended to Tideswell for much of the day.
The stream petered out towards dusk. As a result, it
has been a mostly cloudy day with fairly frequent
slight showers. These didn’t amount to much but it’s
been a rather dreary, damp day. Max temp 6.3°.

0900z   29006kt 10km -SHRA 7Cu005 05.3/04.7 1025
RMK:   The main shower shower stream this morning has
been running SE from the Wirral, passing SW of Stoke
on Trent and keeping well away from here. A second
stream has been developing running from just off the
Cumbrian coast to Preston and Manchester. That stream
has now extended to Tideswell and beyond.

backed a little, the Liverpool Bay shower stream came
back over us yesterday evening. It appears to have
been dry since midnight but the radar isn’t looking
too promising this morning.

0900z   25011g39kt 4000 RA 4Cu008 7Sc020 06.3/05.2 999
RMK:   Almost continuous slight to moderate rain. The wind
is very variable in strength due to our partial shelter
from the west. It’s coming in surges of very strong winds
alternating with lulls of near calm. The result is that
the mean wind speed is not particularly strong but we

just as the light was fading but they were too late
to allow any sunshine. Even by Tideswell standards the
past fortnight has been exceptionally dull. There’s

days there were quite long spells of Force 6 and on
both days the wind peaked at Force 7. This is the
first time that Force 7 has been reached in October in

of 44 knots. The previous highest in October in my

last long as we had a 46 knot gust on Saturday. Very
much quieter today, though it is a bit soggy!
